As part of this year’s Niskayuna’s Arbor Day Fest, the Niskayuna Tree Council had an art contest featuring the artwork of Niskayuna High School students. We also had students submit Arbor Day Fest posters, and middle school students designed two mosaics. There were 40 very beautiful and creative entries! Attendees at the Arbor Day Fest voted on their favorite entries, and we are pleased to announce the following winners. We also want to congratulate all the artists who entered, as we heard from many residents who attended the event that it was hard to choose just one favorite among all the talented entries!
The 1st place winner was Lily Huth. Her drawing is of a willow tree in front of a stream, with a background of blue sky and wispy white clouds. The various subtle shades of green and detailed depiction of a willow tree evokes a peaceful, serene feeling of being in nature, and makes this one an overall winner.

Claire Eager captured 2nd place with her very creative and accurate depiction of a “tree root” heart at the center of the drawing surrounded by, and giving life to, the five trees surrounding it. This painting always stopped people in their tracks when viewing it, and makes one realize that trees are the “beating heart” of nature, and essential to our survival.
There were 10 Arbor Day Fest flyers submitted, and the winner was Connor Comley. His depiction is of a tree with an illuminated tree seedling heart at the center of its trunk in front of a dark background, contrasted by light green, emerging tree seedlings, and the words “Anything Grows…even Heroes. Save the Trees, Save the World.” This poster best captured this year’s theme for our Arbor Day Fest which was “Be a Tree Hero.”
There were also seven honorable mentions. The five art contest honorable mentions are: Luciana Girolami, Sophie Braunstien, Emma Magnati, Emersyn Torres, and Ava Ehrlich.

And the two Arbor Day Fest flyer honorable mentions are: Brooke Colo and Davis Heller.

The Niskayuna Tree Council wants to thank all the contestants for their wonderful entries. You can see all of the entries below. And a big thank you to Art and Design Teacher, Melissa Leach, and Director of Art & Design, K-12, Sara Bussert for coordinating this event and helping with all of the poster and artwork entries.
